Prologue

The crickets chirped loudly that night. The sound of the ocean rippling against the shore could be heard from miles away. It was dark, despite the moonlight. It was cold despite the warm summer season. It was creepily foggy. The kind that you only found in movies. It was so thick--thick as if it wanted to choke anyone who crossed its path.

She ran.

She ran as fast as she could, yet it seemed she wasn't getting anywhere fast.

It was like she was in a dream. You know one of those dreams where you're running from someone but you can't seem to get away from them? That's exactly how she felt right now. No matter where she turned, where she hid, he found her. She looked behind her, not watching where she was going. She tripped on something and stumbled all over the place.

Regaining her balance, her feet pounded on the ground under her. She had to find somewhere to hide. But where? She quite didn't know the area. As a matter of fact, she didn't even know where she was! She looked behind her again. Her vision was beginning to become blurry but she could tell that he wasn't behind her.

At least not yet.

She ran past an old abandoned house and stopped. Looking at it, she quickly made her way up the steps. She jiggled the handle and pushed open the door, barging inside and closing it behind her. Raising her hand to her mouth, she coughed as the fowl stench of oldness crept into her nose and throat. God it smelled in there. She walked in further, looking around frantically. Where could she hide? Where could she hide? That was the question on her mind. Wherever it was, she had to find it fast.

She quickly ran upstairs and around the banister. There were a million rooms there! She chose the last room, pushing open the door and closing it. The moonlight from the dusty window had barely shown through but she knew she was in a bedroom. Scrambling fast, she went for the closet door.

Locked.

She went to another door, what she thought may be a bathroom.

Locked.

Fuck! Where was she going to go? Where was she going to hide? She raised her hands, clutching her hair. She needed to hide. She had to hide! She went to the closet door again, this time, pulling the door as hard as she could. It swung open. She fell down but she quickly crawled inside the closet, shutting the door tightly. It was hot and dusty in there. She could hardly breath. She waited in the corner, pulling her knees to her chest. She was safe. Wasn't she?

She closed her eyes, hot tears running down her face. She wished this were a dream. And if it was, why didn't she wake up yet?

It was quiet, save for her hiccups.

Then she heard a loud bang.

Her body jumped as she gasped, covering her mouth.

He was there!

She could feel his loud footsteps walking through the house.

"Please don't come up here. Please don't come up here. Please..." She whispered to herself. But as if on cue, the footsteps got louder. He was coming up the stairs. There were so many rooms. Maybe he would check a few of them and get tired.

No. That wasn't how her luck ran.

The bedroom door swung open, cracking off the hinges.

Her body wracked with hard sobs. She tried to keep them down, choking herself with them.

"Aaaaallison. Come out, come out wherever you are."

His deep voice shook her to the core. She could feel it rumbling in her toes. Clenching her eyes shut, she kept quiet and held her breath.

"I know you're in here Allison. Don't try to fool me. You can't fool me. I'm smarter than you. Don't you know that?"

A few moments later, her head lifted. It was so quiet. So very quiet. Gulping, she moved to her knees, quietly crawling to the door. Her blue eye peaked through the key hole. She saw nothing but the bed and another door. There was no sign of him anywhere. Did he leave? Did he get tired and leave? She couldn't hear anything, but her heart that was thumping loudly in her ears.

She held her breath as time seemed to stop.

Suddenly, the door was yanked open and she was pulled out by her hair. She screamed at the top of her lungs, kicking and screaming.

"No! Nooo! Please, no! Help me! Somebody help me!" Her body slid across the floor, her head hitting something. She winced, looking up at him. His blue eyes bored into her soul. She tried to move, but she couldn't. She hit her head so hard.

"Aaaallison. I've missed you Allison." He chuckled, pulling a dagger out from behind him.

Her eyes went wide as the glare from blade sculpted her face.

"You shouldn't have walked away from me, Allison. I don't like it when people walk away from me."

"Please..." She cried, her body shaking with fear. "Please..." Her eyes got wide as he raised the blade.

"Your time is up, Allison."

"No! Please!" She yelled, her tears running now like a waterfall. Her voice raised, her screams getting louder as the blade came down.

Silence.
